Your Refrigerator Isn’t Cooling: What to check before you call.

So, your refrigerator is not cooling. Here are some common problems that can occur and how to fix them. Regular cleaning and maintenance on your fridge helps it run smoothly, while organizing the fridge and freezer with efficient use of space avoid bumps and obstructions interfering with the fridge's operation.  Here are some common refrigerator problems that can cause your fridge not to cool properly and how to fix them.

Power Source

This is the most common reason for a refrigerator to stop cooling.  Make sure that your fridge is still plugged in, and then open it. If the light doesn’t turn on when you open the door, try plugging a lamp into the outlet.  If it doesn't turn on, check your fuse box or circuit breakers.  If there is power at the receptacle and the refrigerator still doesn't come on it's time to call Machine Language at 630-293-1164. .

Thermostat Improperly Adjusted.

Another common reason for your refrigerator to not be cooling is if the thermostat isn’t set. Ideally, your refrigerator should be set between 32ºF and 40ºF. You may have accidentally bumped the thermostat. Make sure that the thermostat is set correctly.

Blocked Vents

Blocked vents will hinder the correct airflow that your refrigerator requires to operate properly. You should arrange your food in the refrigerator so that normal air circulation is not blocked because overfilling your fridge and freezer with food might block important vents. Your vents might have iced over, which is less common. Simply look at your refrigerator's vents to see if any frost has accumulated on them to check for this. If so, your refrigerator may not be defrosting properly and you should schedule a service call.

Dirty Condenser

To fix a fridge that isn't cooling properly, you may need to clean its condenser coils. Blocked condenser coils can make it harder for the heat generated by your fridge to be released, and this issue may occur if you have pets or a kitchen that is greasy. You can clean your condenser coils with a damp rag every three to four months, if needed. . The condenser coils are generally located on the back or bottom of the refrigerator.  You can use a leaf blower, vacuum cleaner, or compressed air to blow the dust out.  There are also long thin condenser brushes for this purpose.

Leaky Door Gaskets

Gaskets are the soft, flexible seal on your refrigerator doors that keep the cold inside it and seal the fridge internally. These gaskets prevent cold air from escaping your fridge, and having an issue with them can absolutely cause your fridge to stop cooling. If you suspect that faulty gaskets are at fault for your fridge’s problems, then you should feel all around the edge of your refrigerator door to try to notice if you feel any air escaping. If you do, then you should clean your gaskets with a damp rag around the affected area. If the problem continues, you may need to have your gaskets replaced by a technician.

If you're noticing your fridge cooling problems worsening, there may be a gasket issue causing the problem. Follow these steps to determine if there is a gasket problem and correct it: Feel around the edge of your fridge door; If you feel any air escaping, it may be time for a gasket replacement. Try cleaning the gasket with warm water and dish soap.. If that doesn't solve the problem, the door might need adjusting, or the gaskets replaced.

Clearance

Your refrigerator needs enough space to operate properly.. Your refrigerator should have a half inch of clearance on all sides and an inch of clearance in the ABC to work properly. To fix an issue with clearance, make sure it has enough space for proper air circulation.

Tips for maintaining and extending the lifespan of refrigerators:

  1. Keep the refrigerator clean:
Wipe down the interior and exterior regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt, dust, and grime.
